Bilal is facing serious allegations from Jamila Raegan, the mother of his adult son Bashir, who accused the Grammy-winning singer of abuse and claimed she is caring for their son alone.
“I’m not okay,” Raegan wrote in an emotional social media post. “I’m not okay because I’ve spent over half of my life protecting an abuser. His name is Bilal Oliver aka bilalmusic.”
Raegan said Bashir has multiple disabilities, including autism and bipolar disorder, and alleged that the responsibility for caring for him has fallen solely on her.
“I am caring for him alone while his father continues to live his life in complete disregard,” she wrote. “I am suffering.”
Raegan did not share specific details about the alleged abuse or identify particular incidents in her post and her allegations have not been independently verified.
She also thanked relatives, friends and members of her community who she said have supported her, but admitted she was struggling.
“I am breaking,” she continued. “I am not okay.”
After the accusations circulated online, Bilal commented on a post from The Jasmine Brand, writing, “Wow. This is so sad.” He has not publicly addressed the specific allegations.
Bilal rose to prominence with his 2001 debut “1st Born Second” and became associated with the Soulquarians. His collaborations include Kendrick Lamar, Common and The Roots, and he won a Grammy for his contribution to Lamar’s “These Walls.”
