Argentina players Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina could face suspensions after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings over clashes following the World Cup final against Spain.
Assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also charged with alleged assault after several confrontations broke out at MetLife Stadium on July 19. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time through Ferran Torres’ late goal.
Paredes faces three assault counts, while Molina faces two assault counts and an additional allegation of unsporting conduct. Ayala faces one assault count. Argentina’s Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are also being investigated for alleged unsporting behavior.
FIFA announced the charges after spending more than a week reviewing footage and reports from the chaotic postgame scenes.
“In accordance with the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the respondents have now been provided with the opportunity to present their position,” FIFA said. A decision will be issued “in due course.”
The Argentinian Football Association is facing separate proceedings involving alleged discriminatory chants and gestures, security violations, late kickoffs and objects thrown by spectators during several tournament matches.
FIFA is also reviewing a banner displayed by Argentina players after their semifinal victory over England. The sign read, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” meaning, “The Malvinas are Argentine.”
