Tennis star Serena Williams recently attributed her dramatic weight loss to GLP-1 medication but according to “The Good Place” actress, Jameela Jamil, the move was irresponsible.
“The thing I feel most uncomfortable here is that celebrities have access to doctors most others don’t have access to. These ‘miracle’ weight loss drugs come at a price,” Jamil wrote via Instagram.
“The side effects can include paralysis of the gastric system, pancreatitis, cancer, hair loss, osteoporosis, severe malnutrition, muscle mass loss, depression (there have been reports of suicide), thyroid issues, blindness, and they can really wreak havoc on your metabolism,” she continued.
Williams has been criticized by fans for losing her signature curves but the 23-time Grand Slam winner says that she turned to the drug after not being able to lose the weight no matter how hard she trained.
“I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained,” she told PEOPLE. “It was crazy because I’d never been in a place like that in my life where I worked so hard, ate so healthy and could never get down to where I needed to be at.”
“I had never taken shortcuts in my career and always worked really hard. I know what it takes to be the best,” she continued. “So it was very frustrating to do all the same things and never be able to change that number on the scale or the way my body looked.”
GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound have seen a boost in popularity over the past couple of years, but Ozempic, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is facing over 1,800 lawsuits consolidated into federal multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 3094), reportedly totaling more than $2 billion due to the side effects.
