A group of five prominent Black women are planning to file a lawsuit in Atlanta federal court shortly, in an attempt to block the release of Hulu’s new documentary on the 1990s debauchery filled Freaknik event.
Freaknik was an annual Spring Break festival in Atlanta, Georgia in the 1990s, that was primarily attended by students from historically black colleges and universities. It began in 1983 as a small picnic in a public park near the Atlanta University Center sponsored by the D.C. Metro Club for students who could not afford to return home for Spring Break.
But within a few years, it It grew into an annual event that increased in size and popularity in the 1990s, incorporating dance contests, concerts, parties, a basketball tournament, rap sessions and more
But it was also filled with a lot of debauchery, mostly by young college students.
Now many of those college students are in their 40s and 50s, and in the prime of their careers. And Media Take Out learned that five women, who attended the event, are so concerned with what the documentary will reveal about their pasts – that they hired a law firm and are filing a lawsuit to block the release of the film.
The five women, Media Take Out has learned, include a politician, three “high level” corporate executives, and a judge. All of the women are taking the legal action anonymously, we’re told,
We spoke with one woman, who told Media Take Out that she appeared on multiple “Freaknik” videos that have been circulating online. She claims that she “never signed a release” and that the videos – which do not show her in a good light should not be put on a huge platform like Hulu, for millions to view.
The woman we spoke with is a C-suite executive and makes north of $1 million a year. She’s also married, and has three children. She explained to Media Take Out that the video showed her in an “unflattering” light, and she’s hoping to have the courts block its release.
Last week Hulu added a new title to its documentary line-up: Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told. There is not yet a release date for Hulu’s Freaknik documentary, and the streaming service has not yet put out an official press release or trailer. It’s also not clear whether any of the five women will be in the Hulu doc.
However, speculation is that the Freaknik documentary will come out in 2024 which would coincide with the 40th anniversary of the famed 1994 Freaknik celebration.
The documentary has Black women in their 40s worried to death …. here’s what one woman had to say about the release:
