: Looks like there may be a new member of the "African Adoption" club. A South African official confirmed to MediaTakeOut.com that Oprah's pal, Gayle King, is trying to adopt an African girl.
According to the official, who spoke exclusively to MediaTakeOut.com, Gayle's already found the girl she wants to adopt. The insider explains, "The young lady is 2 years old with big beautiful eyes ... and she has the most precious smile you've ever seen."
And the insider claims that Gayle is pretty deep into the adoption process already. The official tells, "She's hired an [adoption] agency and lawyers, so she's well on her way." The source continues, "With the manner she's moving, the entire thing could be completed in a few months."
Adopting South African children is notoriously difficult for United States citizens. According to the State Department website, legal restrictions could drag the process out for two years or longer.

In my opnion i think its great these celebrities r adopting in these other countries, not taking anything away from american children, but they don't have running clean water, bathrooms, in africa. the living conditions is just far worse then america, to me. America has so much power its just used for all the wrong reasons.
Why does it matter if she adopts a child from Africa? Its her CHOICE to do so! So what if it's not a child from here in the US! Has anyone on this board adopted who is talking smack about who she choose to adopt?! So we should not talk at LEAST she is doing something to help a child in need and an African one at that! That is a third world country that desperately needs help and if se wants to help one of the impoverished children there then so be it!
Granted, we have impoverished children here but we also have welfare, foodstamps, free healthcare for children (Child Health Plus), clean water and a host of other programs geared towards children that those children in Africa don't have.

Gotdayum you do have a point, it is their choice, but if I had the money and resources I will clean up home first and foremost, and welfare isn't as simple as everyone assume it is, they even have a time limit now 5years! I agree that you should be able to adopt a child from where ever you please, but it does seem like the latest fad in this country especially amongst celebrities, is to adopt kids from outside of the country. I do however believe that Gail and Oprah give back big time to under previlaged children in this country and have donated millions to programs to better the lives of not only children but people here. I have worked with foster children through a mentoring program and it just breaks my heart that these kids sometimes stay in the sytem with no real family until they are 18.

Jane, gurl u on point. If someone like Madonna tried to adopt an american baby, the birth mom would b all over the fact that she can possibly get some kinda money. I totally agree, I have so much respect for Angelina Jolie and how dedicated she is. U can tell who's for real and who's doing it for TV. There's so many programs that's available to children here, then anywhere else. American is suppose to b the land of opportunity, its not the same for other countries.
People, people....are any of you that are African American adopting? First off, domestic (here in the US) adoption can be very difficult. Jumping through hoops, meeting ridiculous requirements and hoping that a child in the age range you wish to adopt is available. Then for children and babies within a certain amount of time after you have gone through the entire process, the mother has 48 hours to just up and change her mind. Also, many of the children in the system here in the US are not newborns and are minorities with many behavioral issues, mental problems, health issues and so on. Although they shouldn't many states still get away with keeping white families from adopting minority children. International adoptions are for those who can afford it. Most of the children are very young and have been in orphanages since birth. No one is trying to reclaim them and their only experiences are from the orphanage. Because you are not dealing with the US Government and you have money, there is a clear cut plan. You know what you need to do and what you will have to take care of from start to finish until you bring you child home to the US.
Just because celebrities and those who can afford international adoption are in the limelight, doesn't mean there aren't people in the US that adopt domestically. They aren't rich and/or famous. I recall seeing a story on Nightline or 20/20 or something like that where this small northern town adopted children. It started with one family that adopted two brothers I think. Their friends started looking into it and then their church got involved so many of the church members adopted children as well. It was a beautiful story, many families adopting children from different ethnic backgrounds into diverse families. So if celebrities want to join the fad and adopt overseas so be it. It's only a big deal because the media makes it so. Again, minority children make up the majority in the system; yet minorities are the least likely to adopt.
For all of you who continue to whine about why Americans are not adopting American children, go ask your local social services agency or state government. I know several black people who did or want to adopt and here's what happened:
1) One couple in their 40s were told they were too old (they are professionals with a beautiful home and would be great parents. He has children from a previous marriage and is a wonderful father). Would they have been too old if they were able to have their own biological child? Heck, no.
2) Another childless couple put in their paper work and they just got 2 boys after 6-7 years of paperwork!!!! They almost gave up!
3) The house inspections and paperwork are very expensive too.
It's not about filling out paperwork and getting a child. It is expensive, time consuming and frustrating in the U.S to adopt a child, yet there are thousands of black children who need loving homes. Go figure that out for me please.

I agree with you smplyred, there is a lot of red tape here in the US with adoptions. I also agree that there are a low number of African Americans who adopt. The reason why, I wish I knew. I truthfully think we as black people should be foster and adoptive parents for reasons other than money and attention. There are a lot of children here in the system who need a home and many qualified black people who can take them in.

Since when do many black people become proactive and try to change things with this generation? Those days are long gone. If it weren't for the generations before us we'd still be sitting in the "colored" section. A few voices for adoption reform in this country won't make a bit of difference, we need several hundred people or thousands to reform the silly adoption laws in this country.
We pay too much for gas right now and no one can explain why. All we get are a bunch of excuses yet when the price of a barrel of oil is down the gas prices are still up. Some things just can't be changed without leadership and that's lacking right now. Start by getting your community to write letters to their politicians. That's a start. On a more pertinent note...@ got_dayum: the U.S. is the ONLY developed or developing country that DOES NOT offer basic universal health care to all of its inhabitants (citizen or otherwise)! Our adoption laws are ridiculous, but I agree that some of these celebrities could facilitate reform with their influence while adopting all the babies they want from wherever they want. Kids need adequate health care, and with so many jobs making it unaffordable (WALMART!!) for employees to carry coverage for themselves or their families, the average person here couldn't adopt a child if they wanted to. FYI, the number one cause for bankruptcy in the U.S. is MEDICAL BILLS...many of "our" kids require specialized care due to HIV, mental/physical disability, etc. Insurance companies stay "cutting costs" and even those with coverage may soon find themselves with no coverage for a child's needs and no ability to pay outta pocket. We aren't the richest country because we share our wealth...we're rich because the notion of capitalism has no allegiance. The rich make there money off those "beneath" them and drop us like bad habits when we start costing them more than they think we're worth!

If you've been to South Africa, like I have, you would know that the worst projects in the US have nothing on the shantytowns near Jo'burg, where a kid will straight get 1) starved to death; 2) AIDS; 3) raped; or 4) all around f'ed up. The US is one of the only places with fat poor people. Although there are kids needing adoptions here, it simply is worse in Africa.
