Zoe is beautiful. She's mixed and besides hollywood sees her complexion and it doesn't matter if she's latina, they see a black woman. We still live in a black/whte dichotomy, unfortunate, but true. Nothing wrong with getting more women of color in hollywood.

@ domprincess Last time I checked, most Dominicans were black, or have some African blood in them...just b/c u guys are in denial about being black, doesn't mean that u aren't black...if your skin is black, then u are BLACK!!!... "Dominican" is NOT a race!!! That's like me going around saying that I'm "West-Indian" (which is comprised of Caribbean people of many different races), instead of saying that I'm black...

OK... Love me some Zoe... She is 100% Dominican just like myself. @Sexyrelle We all know that Dominican is our nationality and black is just the color of our skin. Like her I am very proud of being a black Dominican woman and I am very proud of my African heritage. I love the fact that because of my African roots I am as beautiful as I am and with an ability to dance that most other races or nationalities would envy! While in college I had to go around expressing this fact I am Dominican born and raised over there but beacuse I am proud of my nationality does not that I am denouncing my Black African Heritage however I do not go around calling myself black because as far as I know I am not a color.

MissBlaze43

@ MochaDLight.... I like that. True, some might not like that analogy, but it is what it is.

sexyrelle
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

@ oneflyqueenb Actually, "Hispanic" is an ethnicity, and NOT a race..the same way "West-Indian" is an ethnicity and NOT a race... an affiliation resulting from cultural ties... like there are syrians, greeks, africans, chinese, indians, etc. that have been in the Caribbean for generations, and consider themselves to be "West-Indian", but they are all different shades & races... however, we all know that a "Hispanic" could be blacker than my shoe, and they would rather eat a dog alive than ever call themselves "black!!"... so I'll just leave it at that... u believe what u want, and I'll believe what I want...there's really no point in arguing about it...

sexychoclit

yep, she's beautiful, regardless of her race or ethnicity (but in Hollywood she represents a black woman- thats all they see)

Cold_Kryss
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

I read a magazine article on an interview she did and she said she doesn't like really commenting on her race because she's tired of constantly being asked, "What are you mixed with? What's your nationality?" But she said she is mixed with both black and latin blood and I think something else that I can't recall at the moment. Ya'll consider Halle, Alicia and everybody else beautiful black women mixed or not, so Zoe's no different-she's a beautiful multi-racial woman. It doesn't matter what we consider her. The only ones that can take the blame for her beauty is her parents! So, ya'll need to cut the shit over which race gets credit...

girliegirl87
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

She looks really pretty in these pictures. I hope I will see her in a movie soon. I love Zoe she rocks.

Cold_Kryss

And yes, she is still young. I didn't know you had to be 15 to make it in Hollywood. She is a grown ass woman, though...

Sexyrelle, I couldn't have said it any better. This guy I know that is Panamanian will not identify with being black and he is much darker than Zoe Saldana. They don't get it. But anyways, she is pretty and Syesha from American Idol resembles her to me.

Im lovin the sophistication....i believe some are so focused with not wanting to label themselves as black because of the negative terms that come with the ethnicity....in actuality black is beautiful....couldn't convince me to believe any different....

1colombianqueen
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Just because someone says they are latina it doesn't mean they are denying their color, they're just embracing their culture. I'm light skinned and I hate when people try to say I'm white. Because I'm not - I'm latina. So it goes both ways - we're not trying to put anybody else down or deny something we just wanna rep our own culture. You know what's weird, when there's some big controversy about a latino person saying the "N" word or something everyone jumps up and says "I don't care what shade they are if their not black they shouldn't be saying it." But now it's like, "We don't care where she's from she's still black." Which one is it? (It really doesn't matter to me, I wouldn't use that word but I'm just curious what you guys are thinking.)

shezfrshhh
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Either way...we all know ONE drop determines it all, LMAO. She better start identifying with us now before she gets the MJ treatment from black folk.

jrstewart
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

I have always thought she was beautiful. And although it doesn't matter, I did read once that she said she's black and hispanic. To be honest, she has more african american facial features to me. Anywho, she is a very lovely lady and looks great without makeup and extra effort.

Hamptons
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

I didn't say Zoe is denying her color....I said some are focused with not wanting to identify themselves as black....the message was in reference to some of the comments above my statements.....I actually thought Zoe was black and latina though

Annie
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

She is 100% DOMINICANA! She was raised in the D.R.

Annie
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

sexyrelle: Your attempts to distinguish race from ethnicity are futile. There is no such thing as biological "race." Race is a social construction, whose definition changes through time. What was defined as "black" pre-Civil Rights era (1/4 black) versus post-Civil Rights era (one drop rule) is an illustration of the changing nature of "race." There is more genetic race, and there is more genetic variation amongst blacks than between blacks and whites, even in the continent of Africa. All this to say, that there is no such thing as race. It is a social imagination. As such, one's ethnicity is much more relevant than what you have defined as one's race. Furthermore, biologists, anthropologists, and social scientists have acknowledged that there is no rigid way of defining race as we interpret it in pop culture. The only thing that matters in reality is your cultural/ethnic idenity. Zoe can speak Spanish, was raised in the D.R., and is Latina. You cannot say that she is "black" and that her sister is "white" because of their skin colors. It is ludricrous. They are both Latina, a ethnic group or social race with many skin colors. Read some research before you try to school people on race and ethnicity.

SexyBiFemGirl

Now people want to claim her as Black but if it was some other story, it would be "she's not Black." Most of you MF'S are ignorant and confused. She is Latina. Get it,LATINA and BEAUTIFUL.

Missmedia81
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Black Hollywood has just as many fat chicks as skinny. She is hot. The roles she goes for are black female roles so whatever she is she can identify with both groups. They dropped slaves off in the Dominican Republic thats why people think she is African American. Race in regards to DNA for"Natives" "blacks" and "Latinos" in the Caribbean are more similar than different anyway. How they choose to describe themselves depends more on what country you refer to. Blacktinos are just as proud of their Spanish, native roots and sometimes Asian and other Euorpean heritage as they are African so let them do them cause a lot of them are a combo of different groups of people similar to inland African Americans.

alluretheboss

Miss_NC
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

This is a personal quote from Zoe when asked about her heritage: When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, "¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?" (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don't understand it, and it's the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, "Yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.") [They go,] "Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita." ("Oh no, you are 'dark skinned'") I'm like, "No! Let's get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.")

Miss_Lady_

She's pretty...I wish her well

Hamptons
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

There is only one race.....the term race can only be referred to the human race.....

Umm, I think some people are confused. Just because you're "Latino" don't mean you're not black. You're black!!!

Oh my God, she's hotttt!!!

TrinaTruthTella
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Love Zoe, I just wish she'd eat something.

TrinaTruthTella
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

And Zoe's right, and that's one reason why I love her. She be reppin' for Afro-Latinas in La La Land. Yes, she is a Black woman, and that doesn't make her any less Dominican or any less Latina. That's why she be saying she's a Black woman in Spanish LOL! Can't believe folks -- especially those stupid reporters -- who still don't freakin get it. Not all Black people are African American. Folks need to take a sociology class or something. And f**k it, I'll say it, especially other Latinos who think we're all Indian or Spanish (i.e. European i.e. WHITE.) No, we're not so get it right.

TrinaTruthTella
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

A brief lesson for yall that got it twisted. Zoe's 100% Dominican which is her nationality. That makes her Latina which is an ethnic group. Racially, she is Black. She's not Black because either of her parents is African American. African American and Black are not one and the same. African Americans are ONE kind of Black people. Or to keep it politically conscious, African Americans are part of the AFrican diaspora. So are a whole bunch of people across the globe including millions in Latin America including the Dominican Republic. So if you're saying that she's Latina, you're right. If you're saying because she's Latina, she's not Black, you're WRONG. If you're saying she's Black, you're right. But if you're equating Black with African American, WRONG. If you're saying she's mixed, it depends on what you mean. By nature given their history, Dominicans are a triracial people mixed with African, Spanish, and Indian blood. However, if you're saying she's mixed 'cause one parent is this and one parent is that, WRONG! Gotdam, people, this is 2008. Get your learn on. Why Trina gotta be schooling heads on a Friday? If you think I'm messing with you, go ask a college professor and not Mooky on the corner.

sexyrelle
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

@ Annie: Personally, I don't think Zoe is cute, so if "hispanics" want to claim her, then so be it.... There IS a difference between race and ethnicity, which is why they have different definitions in the dictionary!!... Just because a group of people consider their ethnicity to be more important to them in their daily lives that does not mean that race does not exist... Race is usually determined by the colour of one's skin & other physical characteristics, and even though different countries categorize people differently based on these factors, it doesn't mean that the concept of race does not exist... If my skin is black, obviously I am not white person, regardless of how many languages I speak...when you look at a person, you make an instant judgment as to what race they are… you don’t know if one of their parents is white, or if they can speak spanish… if you see black skin, you will consider that person to be “black.” I grew up in The Bahamas, and we never had the "one-drop" rule, so what you are saying just applies to the American definition of race... We all have seen the articles about people in DR that hate their black skin and coarse hair, and cling to the fact that they are "hispanic" just b/c they can speak spanish...also reports of dominicans not being allowed into night clubs b/c they are "too dark." My paternal great grandmother was Cuban, and my paternal grandmother was also mixed with white. I am West-Indian and very proud of it, but if I am asked to select a race, it will be “black.” West-Indian is my cultural/ethnic heritage, but I still consider myself to be a black person. The bottom line is that we are going to believe what we want to believe. Your writing a mini-dissertation is not going to convince me otherwise, the same way whatever I post is not going to change your mind.

girlygirl
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Ok, I think people need to refresh themselves about the Middle Passage. Prior to African Migration during slavery, those islands were not inhabited by Africans. Those islands were drop off points. The only difference between her and you is that your ancestors were bought to the Americas. Cubans, Puerto Rican, Dominicans, Haitans...are all Africans. African Americans are Africans. Don't get it twisted. We are all descentants of Africans. Don't be confused about the language. Don't get mixed up in the mixed heritage. There is only one source of melanin. She is Black.

Some of you pick and choose who can be Black and who cant be. Its so funny. This woman knows who she is and I dont think people arguing over it on an MTO website is going to change that. She is a beautiful Latina and she is proud of what she is and thats cool. Not many people are.

I think the headline reads, "THE NEW IT GIRL In Black Hollywood". It doesn't say, African American Hollywood. "not all people from Pr. DR or Cuba are dark skinned some are VERY light" Not all African Americans are dark skinned some are VERY light, what's your point? Black is a color and a description. Melanin only has one source.

@sexyrelle......Preach girl, educate the simple minded. @Datsu7......Ur what happens when azz ugly and nasty meet up, have a few to many drinks n don't call each other the next morning....I'll definitly take two steps back n then turn run.

prettyinpink08

Okay I agree that you can still be black and latino/latina just like you can be white and latino/latina..........but listen up people just because someone has dark skin does NOT mean they are black. Okay MANY EAST INDIANS HAVE DARK SKIN BUT WOULD YOU CALL THEM BLACK? NOOO don't think so.... lets not be foolish here. Alot of Chinese people have very fair skin like white people but would you call a Chinese person white? no. Okay? so it's not just about skin color, think about what you say before you speak. (BTW, not all "black" people have dark skin either, in fact some are very fair skinned to almost white skin).

Pinksky

OMG.....Zoe is very pretty for the record. But I must comment on the previous conversation between Datsu7 and imaflirt20. Clearly that is not your picture on your avatar if you speaking so ill about the pretty BOO you look like road kill like the possum I tried not to re hit this morning on my way to work. I've seen ugly men dressed as women that look better than you.....your blew out. Maybe that's why your so bitter your a paper bag hoe...huh...a female so ugly you have to wear a paper bag over your head to get down,......so for you. good looks missed you in the worst way.....and by the way imaflirt20 I think you gotta it going on.....brush these haters off.....even though I'm sure her remarks cracked your side....

girlygirl
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Remember this, ALL like originated from.....you sitting down?....South Africa. Some East Indians and All Fijians (all I've ever met) are dark as hell. Now do I consider those people black? Yes! If black is a description. Do they consider themselves black? Prolly not. But MELANIN HAS ONLY ONE SOURCE!

uhm

oneflyqueenb and SexyBiFemGirl You two are idiots! Even Zoe calls herself black! Remember the movie with Ashton Kutcher about a white guy dating a black girl that costarred in? DUH! Hi everyone, just reading these posts on here. I am English Woman of Colour (mom black Jew) and my dad is American Indian (Sioux/Cherokee). They taught me a lot and I am proud of both races they have been through a lot. Understand this in England they teach us differently than you, we get the truth. This is what I was taught black was used to divide black people from the races in which were birthed from the African continent. It was used also because black in every culture is associated with evil and bad so mentally people would automatically dislike the race and not want to be associated with it. You have to realise slavery was a mental, emotional and body overhaul torture experience. Mental control was the main avenue to control the person. A black person personally I like person of colour because honestly you are not pitch black. We are all still some form of brown. Also the darkest man I have ever met was in England and he was from Greece we (school kids) thought he was African but his hair and his skin was dark like blue (although he had straight hair). It is funny if she was broke everyone would call her black and why would she be in black movies instead of Latino. There must be a problem there if she can't act in Spain, Mexico, Brazil or any other Latin countries. In England I just feel I am English only since I have been living here I have experienced all this crap you have to think about and have to go into all this stuff. People are people. If a cat can take care of a puppy and puppy can take care of a kitten we should be able to do a lot better than what we have been doing. :)

papamurf
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

She's a hot but I'm not sure if she's the "IT" girl just yet. I hope it happens for her. BTW. Spanish, Hispanic, or Latin is not a race, its a culture. That would be like saying Sammie Sosa and Ricky Martin are the same race.

girlygirl
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

@ T007009 People ARE people.

papamurf
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

This whole argument about race is why I agree with many scientists who say that the whole idea of race makes no biological, or scientific sense. Especially the way we define it in America. But, you'll never get people to buy into that. Some people define themselves based on what race they are.

T007009
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Also, just wanted to say that the 'n' word meant a person of low standards, no manners, no etiquette, and shady character. Overseas that is what it meant not black people. Only here did the dictionary Webster decide to change it. So if that is the word you want to use to describe yourself go right ahead but it is not a nice word. It was used in hate and can never recover from it anyway and it has no value because it was never a good word to start out with in the first place.

GOSH I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MANY IGNORANT PEOPLE POST ON THIS SITE AND ARE CLUELESS TO THEIR OWN RACE/CULTURE/NATIONALITY...IT'S VERY SAD TO ME WHEN THERE ARE PEOPLE WITH SKIN COLOR ABOUT THE SAME AS MINE OR THAT IS DARKER THAN MINE WILL GET THEIR PANTIES IN A BUNCH BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS CALLED THEM BLACK...GTFOH SHYT IF YOU AREN'T BLACK, THEN HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM...BECAUSE WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MAKE ME??

OH YEAH, DO ANY OF YOU REMEMBER THE PUERTO RICAN JULISSA THAT USED TO BE ON BET'S "OH DRAMA!"? SHE ALWAYS REFERED TO HERSELF AS BEING A BLACK PUERTO RICAN AND WHEN THOSE OTHER WOMEN, VANESSA AND KIM, WERE DISCUSSING ISSUES THAT THE BLACK/AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY FACE, JULISSA WOULD COMMENT USING "WE" AND KIM IGNORANT SELF WOULD SAY "WHO IS WE?" TRYING TO TELL JULISSA SHE WASN'T BLACK...ALL I COULD DO IS SMH @ THAT IGNORANCE...

1colombianqueen I agree with your comments. I am a very Light skinned Latina (Puerto Rican and Honduran to be exact) When people see me they automatically assume Im WHITE. I do LOOK white but I DAMN SURE do NOT consider myself WHITE. So it does go both ways its not just about "denying being black" Its more about repping your culture. Plus I have many other ethnic characteristics so I dont ever want to be categorized as WHITE Zoe id predominately Black yes, but others like her from DR end up having say, light skinned sisters/bros so they really dont identify themselves with a race. Same with me in vice versa. My dad is Ameridian and Black Honduran and is med skin toned and my bro is his complexion as well but I am the lightest in my entire fam but we all consider ourselves LATINO. We are bi-tri-or multiracial whatever you want to call it but we are LATINO. Anyways in this age I dont know how many "pure" people are out there now anyways cuz about 75% if not more of the world has that "one drop" rule people talk about.

Bottom line is we all descended from sigle celled organisms called ameobas and then we mutated into some amphibian form then from primate anscestry and homo erectus yada yada next thing u know we are HUMANS. Everyone needs to get over the race/color issue. Unfortunately it is still and issue nonetheless. If more people just tried getting to know a person as a PERSON and what type of person w/ what type of values they have we aould all be better people

BrooklynLatina

Heres a scenario Now as my signature line suggests, I love playing devils advocte On that note Alex Rodriguez is also a Dominican who's features are pretty close to Zoe's (minus the green eyes) If MTO posted a story that Arod was caught using the N-word over and over what do you think most of the comments here would say? Thats he's not black and shouldnt be using it. Shyt if Zoe Saldana was caught using the word Im sure alot of people on her would be calling her all sorts of S.pic and wet.back etc. At that point she probably wouldnt even be considered Blach anymore eh? And its just food for thought.

girlygirl Flag post I think the headline reads, "THE NEW IT GIRL In Black Hollywood". It doesn't say, African American Hollywood. "not all people from Pr. DR or Cuba are dark skinned some are VERY light" Not all African Americans are dark skinned some are VERY light, what's your point? Black is a color and a description. Melanin only has one source. papamurf Flag post Spanish, Hispanic, or Latin is not a race, its a culture. That would be like saying Sammie Sosa and Ricky Martin are the same race. Lexia Flag post I SEE SOME PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME WITH READING AND COMPREHENDING...MTO DID NOT CALL HER AFRICAN AMERICAN IN THE HEADLINE...IT SAYS THAT SHE IS THE NEW IT GIRL IN BLACK HOLLYWOOD...HELLO BLACK HOLLYWOOD...FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, SHE IDENTIFIES HERSELF AS A BLACK LATINA, NUFF SAID!

BKLYN LATINA A-ROD AND ZOE SHARE THE SAME FEATURES? GET GLASSES! AND YES SHE CAN BE CALLED A SPI.C! A SPI.C LIKE A LATINO DOESN'T HAVE A COLOR! Zoe id predominately Black yes, but others like her from DR end up having say, light skinned sisters/bros. UHM WATS UR POINT? THAT GOES FOR BLACK PEOPLE EVERYWHERE! HERE'S A QUOTE FROM ZOE: When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, "¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?" (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don't understand it, and it's the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, "Yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.") [They go,] "Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita." uhm, guess you didnt read the rest of taht to get the point but let me break it down for you Zoe id predominately Black yes, but others like her from DR end up having say, light skinned sisters/bros. LIKE HER, not exactly HER but LIKE HER may have a sibling who is light almost white looking and it happens often so we dont necessarily describe ourselves as white OR black, because alot of us (not nec saying Zoe in particular) Are NOT one or the other. We are either AND/OR the other. Big Difference. And Latinos recognize this. Thats like asking Derek Jeter if he considers himself WHITE or BLACK. He would probably say what type of stupid question is that? Im BOTH! So are majority of hispanics we can be mestizo, mulatto, indios, etc so its stupid to categorize us as EITHER one or the other. And for the record since you are telling me to get glasses, cant you tell that Zoe isnt what some would call a "pure" black? She obvioulsy has dips and dabbles of "other" in her DNA which is my main point. How many of us (humans) can claim we are 100% this or that? So its stupid for any of us at this point and time to label ourselves anything specifically. and it just helps add to the division of humanity. Fk that skin us and we are all the same inside. Fk labels period. But people still do, and we still have small minded individulas will still only focus on each of our differences to tear us apart instead of focusing on the bigger picture and just accept each other for who we are inside.

BKLatina, I get what you're saying but I don't get what you're saying...lol All African Americans are mixed with something...everyone from Vanessa Williams down to Diddy...But we identify as the Black race...So I guess I'm confused when you say that Zoe is not pure Black, I guess if you're looking at it like that, then none of us are shouldnt be identified as Black? I guess I'm not getting the real argument because that argument can go for us all...Me personally have the background of African,Native American, Italian, Asian...But I consider myself Black...and an African American...

BrooklynLatina
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Hey Lexia I guess Im not explaining it right? Ok it cuz alot of us Latinos for many many moons have known off the back we arent one or the other race and with people like say Jlo, you can tell she isnt black but isnt white either. With me when I walk throught the door at first i look white but then you can tell Im not exatly white either. Many Latinos are like that so alot of us dont consider ourselves white or blach or american indian cuz we have it all in us. Dont call me WHite, I will fight you about that-lol jk.But at the same token Im so obvioulsy not black either so what am I supposed to tell you? I dont know its just how it is with plenty of us Latino's because of our diversity alot of us cant claim to be one or the other really so saying Latino is really a connotation of the fact that we are bi-tri-multi racial. I think Black Americans with heavy dilution of their Black DNA dont really look at it that way, like they are just Black period when really they arent 100%. Without wanting to sound offensive but I know it will probably sound that way, maybe they want to deny that they have anything else in them besides black and just want to be black and without accepting that they have other in them as well. And alot of Blacks are more obviously Black than anything else so they identify as Black. Alot of us Latinos lets use Roselyn Sanchez for example (chic from Rush Hour 2)arent as obvious so oh well how would it look like if she was to tell you she was Black? Or say No im WHite? She has too much happining in her DNA going back in her family for a long time so she identifies herself as Latina.

SHE IS DOMINICAN, AND SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE FROM THE REGION HAVE AFRICAN ANCESTRY..SHE IS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. FOR ALL YOU WHO DON'T REALIZE THIS, THE SLAVE SHIP WENT BEYOND EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES. she promotes herself as a latina, which she is..but she also takes black film roles. she will always be seen in the media as black, because she looks black not latin. BUT DOES IT ALL MATTER? truth is, most people have black blood or white blood in their ancestry. that is why some people who are hispanic have darker skin because of african ancestry, and others may have white ancestry. color shouldn't matter though.

BrooklynLatina
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

uhm I see what you are saying too and yeah when it is that obvious it would be stupid to claim you are not black. Like say Vladimir Guerrero (yah I know Im using too many Basebal players-lol)He would be stupid to deny his black heritage. Period

BrooklynLatina

oh uhm i forgot to mention that we may be multi-racial but the fact that we speak spanish i guess allows us the opportunity to distinguish that we are Latino. So I guess basically if you are multi racial and you speak Spanish, tada! You got yourself a Latino-lol

Lexia
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

BKLatina Hmmm I guess I can see what you're saying...Years ago, I had a Dominican co-worker and she and I were about the same skin color...Her kids and husband were about the same also except for her youngest son...He was a tad bit darker than the rest...He didn't know how to speak Spanish...She said she was trying to teach him Spanish because the White school teachers and what not were thinking that he was Black...I'm just saying, this is the country we live in and that's just how it is...When people move to different countries, it's common for them to adapt to their life-style and way of life...The US is a country that thrives on race so it's no surprise that people would think that...Unless you have a Spanish accent or something, if you are darker-skinned, someone who doesn't know anything about you or your background wouldn't assume you were Latino but maybe Black or African American instead...Until I learned about her, I wouldn't have ever guessed that Christina Milian was of Cuban decent...Same with Lala Vasquez and countless of others...

BROOKLYN IM COOL WITH A LATINO CALLIN THEMSELVES THAT! I JUST DONT GET TRYIN TO DENY ONES RACIAL MAKEUP! ONE HAS NADA TO DO WITH THE NEXT! DATS WHY I LISTED ALL THOSE BLACK PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE GLOBE EARLIER. BUT IN ZOE'S CASE SHE LOOKS AS BLACK AS DA NEXT BLACK PERSON! SHE CUD INTRODUCE HERSELF AS ZOE WILLIAMS! JUST LIKE GINA RAVERA AND GINA TORRES. THEY COULD CALL THEMSELVES "JONES" AND NO ONE WUD BLINK! THEY BOTHH CALL THEMSELVES BLACK ALSO! THERE'S A DELIBERATE EFFORT IN THE LATIN COMMUNITY TO ERASE "BLACKNESS"! SO I THINK THAT'S WHERE THE BACKLASH COMES FROM!

BrooklynLatina
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Funny you mention Christina Milian cuz I knew she was a Latina with Black heritage. And La La as well but maybe because their last names are Spanish so it was a dead giveaway. But thats how I felt about Bernie Williams. I had no clue he was Puerto Rican and when u hear him talk its like okay there it is-lol. But I was a lil confused with him I knew he was Black but he didnt look 100% cuz his nose is kinda pointy-lol And with Destiny's Child came out I didnt think Beyonce was Black, she looked like she had something else swimming in there. I guess as a Latino you kind of learn to make those distinctions early, kind of like I guess an Asian person knows that another Asian is or isnt Chinese. I made that mistake once and referred to one of my freinds as Chinese when she was Japanese-lol. Oh lord did I hear it. She was like, cant u tell-LMAO. Apologetically I told her, no, not really

BrooklynLatina
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

uhm Yeah there is a backlash with people of color against the whites period. My friend went to Guatemala recently and all the wealthy land owners in the specific town she visited were of the more European persuasion, the light ones, and the more poorer people, the servants, the "help" were the Amerindians. THe division and attitude towards it was so blatant it was ridiculous it pissed me off. And DR sadly is like that as well, they like to deny their blackness. I mean so fkn what u have it big deal. Alot of them have problems accepting it so they try to say they dont have even an ounce when hello! To me really it doent matter. Im Latina, I speak Spanish, I love my culture and when I say that I accept every drop of whatever is in me that makes me, me! lol

Lexia
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Yeah see I didn't learn the last names until later...Well Christina's last name is Flores or something like that... But I defnitely understand what you mean by people wanting to identify with their Culture/Nationality...But Zoe and Milian have never tried to deny their racial make-up...So seeing some people on here running and jumping to their defense saying that Zoe is Dominican and not Black or whatever just raised a red flag...Like we all, well most, already know she's of Dominican descent because she's been around for a little minute and has openedly talked about it...

uhm QUESTION: HOW DID U FEEL WHEN JLO ANNOUNCED SHE WAS GOIN TO PLAY PRIMARILY "ANGLO" ROLES? ALOT LATINOS WERE UPSET WITH HER! I WAS JUST CONFUSED CUZ DAT CHIC DOESNT LOOK WHITE ALL TO ME! ---------------------------------------------- Honestly I was like Good! (even though I dont really like her-loo) But white's have been doing it forever. In the Good the BAd and the Ugly you had white men playing Mexicans and Yule Brenner I dont know WTF he was supposed to be-lol West Side Story, I think the only REAL LAtino in that movie was the dude who played "chino" and Rita MOreno (Anita) the rest of the Sharks and their bytches were all White dudes. I mean technically I get upset when someone who is not what the character really is plays that part, its annoying but fk it Hollywood is all fake anyway. Ben Stiller tries to point that out with a character in his new movie (Robert Downey Jr) who is an actor in the movie and takes the role of a black soldier in an "apocolypse now" type flick-lol. And then they cut to a scene where people are like bashing him for taking on the "black" role-lol

BrooklynLatina

Lexia Oh please-lol Jessica Alba was always denying her "mexican/Latina-ness) and then when J-lo and Salma Hayek and Eva Longoria started getting thier shine on and whites started praisng them for being these Latina divas, now she jumps on the Latino bandwagon-lol She was quoted recently as saying that she wants to teach her baby Spanish now cuz her father didnt teach it to her and she hopes she has a "brown" baby-NO LIE! Thank God I was blessed with some up top...haha I got the meat in the right places... @BKLatina, yeah I know she said she wanted brown babies...That didn't make sense to me being that she acted like being Mexican was a disease...But yeah now she junmps on the bandwagon...I questioned Cameron Diaz too...

Lexia

CORRECTION I meant they don't have fake boobs and neither do I and I don't have A cups...LOL

BrooklynLatina
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Yeah I wasnt really feeling her cuz she could have repped for us light/skinned looking latinas and she basically associated herself more with whites. But unlike Alba, she never tried to dwonplay her Cuban side. As far back as when the Mask came out she volunteered in an interview being half Cuban and having this addiction to Cuban (real) Cuban sandwiches the way the Cubans make em-lol. So I was like Ok had that been Alba she probably would have said "Who told u I was Latina? Who let my deep DARK secret out?"-lol.

BrooklynLatina

But in Camerons defense her looking so extremely white I dont think Hollywood would ever pick her up for a Latino roll so she has to make her paper playing white cuz she doesnt even have the teeniest of accents she sounds like a valley girl

I HAVE TO LET THIS OUT. I AM A BLACK LATINA BUT WHY IS IT THAT PPL WHO ARE NONLATINO MAKE IT SEE AS IF LATINOS ARE ALL FUKIN WHITE. PEOPLE HAVE THIS THING IN FUKIN AMERICA THAT LATINOS HAVE TO BE TAN...BECAUSE THATS HOW "ALL LATINOS LOOK" WHEN PPL SAY OH SHE DOESN'T LOOK LATINA...WHAT THE FUK DOES THAT MEAN. NOT ALL BLACKS ARE AS DARK AS THE NIGHT..SO A LIGHT SKIN AFRICAN AMERICAN...ISN'T CONSIDER "BLACK" ENOUGH BECAUSE OF THEIR SKIN COLOR. SKIN COLOR DOESN'T DETERMINE EVERYTHING PEOPLE, BECAUSE THEY ARE PPL WHO ARE MIX WITH BLACK AND WHITE AND COME OUT WITH BLOND HAIR AND BLUE EYES SO BECAUSE OF THAT THEY DON'T LOOK BLACK..DOES THAT MAKE THEM NOT BLACK WHEN IN THEIR GENES...THEY HAVE SOME BLACK IN THEM. I WAS BORN IN THE US AND I WAS RAISED IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND WHEN I LIVED OVER THERE I WAS JUST DOMINICAN AND THE MAJORITY OF DOMINICAN LOOK MORE BLACK THAN ANYTHING ELSE AND OVER THERE YOU ARE JUST DOMINICAN. NOW I CAME TO AMERICA A FEW YEARS LATER AND I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE STUPIDITY THAT PPL THINK THAT BLACK JUST EQUALS AFRICAN AMERICANS. YES MY SKIN IS DARK AND THE COUNTRY I AM FROM IS MIX WITH AFRICAN, INDIAN AND EUROPEAN BLOOD BUT I AM A LATINA. I HAVE BLACK DESCENT THAT I KNOW BUT I AM STILL A LATINA. I DIDN'T GREW UP TALKING ENGLISH, I DIDN'T GREW UP LISTENING TO POP, HIP HOP, Rnb, ROCK...I GREW UP LISTENING TO MERENGUE, BACHATA, SALSA EXCT. I GREW UP EATING RICE AND BEANS, PLATANOS AND SO ON. I WAS RAISED LIKE A LATINA, AND PPL DON'T GET THAT BEING A BLACK LATINA ISN'T DIFFERENT THAN BEING AN AFRICAN AMERICAN...OF COURSE TALKING ABOUT THE TWO DIFFERENT CULTURES. THE COLOR DOESN'T REALLY PLAY A ROLE, JUST THAT IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC YOU WILL SEE PPL FROM BEING REALLY DARK TO BEING WHITE WITH BLOND HAIR....BUT WAIT...THE REAL LATINOS ARE THE "WHITES ONE" BECAUSE LATINOS ARE ONLY WHITE...I DON'T GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!ALL THIS BIG CONTROVERSY...WHILE BEYONCE CALLS HERSELF A CREOLE..WEARS A BLOND WEAVE, GOT A NOSE JOB AND SO ON!! AS SOON AS I SPEAK SPANISH PPL ARE LIKE BUT WAIT AREN'T YOU BLACK? I AM LIKE ARE U FUKIN KDDIN ME. SO THAT MEANS THAT ONLY WHITE PPL OR TANPPL CAN SPEAK SPANISH...I MEAN DOES IT SAY IN THE DICTIONARY THAT THEONLY BLACK PPL IN THIS PLANET ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN...BECAUSE LORD HELP ME. IS 2008 AND PPL DONT KNOW THAT LATINOS AREN'T JUST WHITE. ITS FUNNY HOW IF YOU ARE A DARK LATINO...THEN YOU ARE A BLACK LATINO BUT IF YOU ARE A WHITE LATINO...PEOPLE JUST CALL YOU A LATINO BECAUSE I GUESS TO THEM" BECAUSE YOU ARE WHITE, YOU ARE THE REAL LATINO, YOU LOOK JUST LIKE A LATINO SHOULD LOOK LIKE"...GIVE ME A BREAK. I AM OF BLACK DESCENT OR W.E I AM MIX WITH OR WHO CARES BUT I AM STILL A LATINA. JUST LIKE SOME OF THE AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE THE NERVES TO THAT THEY ARE NOT AFRICANS THAT THEY ARE JUST BLACK BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT FROM THE AFRICAS...MM HELLO...BLACK PEOPLE CAME FROM AFRICA DUH!! DROP THE ONE RULE BLOOD BECAUSE GUESS WHAT? NO ONE IS REALLY PURE ANYTHING THANKS TO THE EUROPEANS. ONE MORE THING...THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IS LOCATED IN LATIN AMERICA...THATS WHY WE ARE LATINOS NOT TOO MUCH BECAUSE OF WHOEVER IS WHITE OR BLACK...EITHER WAY U R STILL A FUKIN LATINA/LATINO.

DRfinestGIRL
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

I MEANT TO SAY THAT BEING A LATINO IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING AN AFRICAN AMERICAN...JUST BECAUSE THE TWO CULTURES AND VERY VERY DIFFERENT. COLORWISE IT DOESN'T MATTER BUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE CULTURE...IT IS NOT THE SAME. AS WE ALL KNOW EVERY COUNTRY HAS THEIR OWN UNIQUE CULTURE.

Beyonce is of Creole descent...That would be why her mother's maiden last name is French...Her Mother's family is from New Orleans, and if most really knew about New Orleans/LA they'd know there are alot of Black folks there of Creole descent...That's why they love Beyonce and the House of Dereon clothing down there...lol They have a totally different culture of their own, just like Latinos so I'm not sure why people have a problem with her acknowledging that...It is no different than Aaliyah, Stacy Dash, etc acknowledging their Native American heritage... Please do some research regarding that...That is why New Orleans is considered to be different from any other place in the US...they have their own accents going down there as well. They have areas like the French Quarters and is known for gumbo and hot and spicey foods... Here's more about the Creole heritage... In the United States, the word "Creole" usually refers to people of any race or mixture thereof who are descended from settlers in colonial French Louisiana before it became part of the United States in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. Some writers from other parts of the country have mistakenly assumed the term to refer only to people of mixed racial descent, but this is not the traditional Louisiana usage. It is now accepted that Creoles form a broad cultural group of people of all races who share a French or Spanish background. Louisianans who identify themselves as "Creole" are most commonly from historically Francophone communities with some ancestors who came to Louisiana either directly from France or via the French colonies in the Caribbean. (Those descended from the Acadians of French Canada usually identify as Cajuns, rather than Creoles.) The term is also often used to mean simply "pertaining to New Orleans". The general perception of a Creole is usually of an olive toned individual. Louisiana's Creole People (Creoles of Color) are of mixed (mainly) French, Spanish, African-American, and Native American heritage[1] Here's info regarding Bey's Mother Tina Knowles... Tina Knowles (born Célestine Ann Beyince on January 4, 1954) is an American fashion designer for her House of Deréon brand. She is of mixed Louisiana Creole descent. Perhaps best known as the mother of singer Beyoncé Knowles, she served as the designer of costumes for her daughter's musical group, Destiny's Child. During the early days of her daughter's career when money was limited, she created outfits that the members wore onstage and to events. They caught people's attention since they were one-of-a-kind garments. As the group grew more successful and had more access to designer fashions, they relied less on Knowles's work. Inspired by the legacy of Knowles's mother, seamstress Agnéz Deréon, she and her daughter, Beyoncé, decided to create their own label, House of Deréon. The clothing line draws its influences from today's hip hop scene as well as the 1970s fashions Knowles grew up with and the 1940s designs that she saw her mother create. Additionally, Knowles is the wife of Mathew Knowles, who has managed Beyoncé's career as well as that of Destiny's Child. With her husband, she has another daughter, singer/actress Solange Knowles, who has been featured in print adverts for House of Deréon. She has a younger brother and is the aunt to Angela Beyincé who works as Beyoncé's assistant. Knowles operates her own beauty salon called Headliners Hair Salon located in Houston, Texas. Agnéz, Tina and Beyoncé are all featured on the House of Deréon website. Tina and Beyoncé have modelled their fashions in advertising and have also appeared together in an ad for the "Got Milk?" campaign.[1] additionally Knowles has a new line that premeried on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) called "Miss Tina" by Tina Knowles. On the official "Miss Tina" myspace page it states that Tina's mother's name was Agnéz Dereon Beyoncé. But it is always written as Beyincé.

History of Les Gens De Couleur Libres...The Free People of Color in New Orleans.... From the colonial days of New Orleans to the present time, a unique group of people has contributed to the most European city in America. They were the "Gens de Couleur Libres", the Free People of Color. Today, commonly known as "Creoles" or "Creoles of Color", their descendants live in all parts of the country. Some have kept the language and culture bestowed upon them by their ancestors, some have lost this heritage to a more "American" way of life. The purpose of this web site is to educate others about the Creoles of the 19th century and to help present day Creoles learn more of their wonderfully rich heritage. From the earliest days of New Orleans history, free persons of color have coexisted with those of European extraction. Some were former slaves who were able to buy their freedom. City dwelling slave masters would often "lease out" slaves for manual labor along the docks and to other businesses in need of labor. Slaves would be allowed to keep a portion of fees charged to "lessors" for themselves, eventually allowing them to buy their freedom. Children of slave women and white owners were often given their freedom either upon the death of the father or while still young. Thousands of free people of color arrived in New Orleans from Saint- Domingue (now Haiti) after the Slave revolts in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Many also came to New Orleans by way of Cuba after 1809. Although they did not have all of the rights of their white counterparts, many free people of color prospered in 19th century New Orleans As of the 1850's, The Free People of Color owned over 2 million dollars worth of property. Much of it in the Faubourg (neighborhood) Treme . (Also see Here From planters to hairdressers, the Creoles contributed to the unique personality of New Orleans, which still attracts tourists today. When tourists and natives alike visit the french quarter, they may not realize that much of what they see and taste is due to the Creoles of Color. Cigar making techniques were brought with refugees from St.Dominque and Cuba. Noted as women who's beauty was renowned, they were presented at "Quadroon" balls, similar to todays debutante affairs. Highly chaperoned by the girl's mother and other relatives these balls allowed meetings between potential protectors and the lovely women. After dancing with a man, if the girl was attracted to the gentleman, he would be allowed to speak with her mother to see if a suitable arrangement could be made. He had to be able to provide her a home, which she would own. The home would be furnished and supplied with servants. All children of the union would have to be well provided for and educated. Male children would often be sent to France , while the daughters were educated in local convent schools. Children were often left substantial inheritances from both their fathers and mothers. These unions would often last for the lifetime of both parties or would end upon the marriage of the man. White Creole men would often marry when in their 30's to white Creole women, combining family fortunes. As many of these marriages were arranged by family the Creole mans relationship with his placee would continue. If it did not continue, the free women of color would pursue other means of support if needed through business ventures, room rentals and occupations such as hairdressing and sewing. Placage was by no means the only opportunity Free Women of Color had to make a living. The majority of women were married and had typical households for the times in which they lived. While financial prosperity was common, discrimination was also. Although business was conducted between Whites and Creoles of color in public houses, they did not socialize outside of business arrangements. Striking of a white person by a free person of color could mean arrest. Free people of color could not vote, no matter how white they may have looked. Women by law were forced to cover their hair with a tignon in the early part of the 19th century.. Being clever, they soon sported elaborate headgear complete with feather and jewels. Opera and theatre going was a favorite passtime of both white and the gens de couleur, although they were not seated together. New Orleans free people of color prospered until the time before the Civil war when the economics of New Orleans attracted "Americans". Until then New Orleans was a "European" city with European customs and mores'. Americans brought with them a distaste for the Creole way of life. Early in the Civil war New Orleans was seized by the north making it difficult for both White and The Gens de Couleur. By the end of the war when slaves were freed and a wave of immigrants poured into the city .Creoles of color were no longer considered a "third" race, . Some jobs that were once held by free people of color were replaced with freed slaves or other immigrants to New Orleans such as the Irish, who would work more cheaply. The social status of the Gens de Couleur was not recognized as it had been. Although some Creoles remained prosperous after the war, many more did not. What has happened to the Creoles since the war? Many families have remained in New Orleans and have raised generations of children still contributing to the wonderful melting pot of the present day city. As opportunities for jobs in other parts of the country became available, some families have since moved. Los Angeles and Chicago have a large Creole population. Many people with telltale French surnames have brought the culture to California. Some families moved to France where they were more accepted. Because many of these families where "white" in appearance they have passed for white and have "blended" in within New Orleans and other parts of America. Descendants of these Creoles may not know about their heritage , which is sad indeed. The Gens de Couleur Libre have left a lasting imprint in New Orleans and a have introduced their rich culture and heritage to other parts of the country. She's ok...skinny...but not bad looking. I wouldn't call her the it girl of black hollywood tho..but hey. And speaking of black. She looks black to me. If they traced her DNA, it would probaly be traced back to african slaves that the spanish brought to that region mixed with indian and spanish DNA. So the african half will make her black, and the indian and spanish half will make her latina. She is a BLACK LATINA...get it right! And it is very prevalent in her features.

@mzarrogance That is so true. People tend to forget that the spanish brought african slaves to south america just like the english brought african slaves to north america. I don't understand why alot of latinas tend to deny their african heritage. It's like they're ashamed of it or something. Why they think they have ass and hips...it sure in the hell didn't come from spaniards & indians. Thats why I find it amusing when they consider themselves "full" latinas. It's like they're only acknowledging the spanish side of them and nothing else. But thats their choice and it is what it is. Italians are another group who denies they have black in them. I guess no one wants to identify with being a "n!gga" lmao. So I'll leave at that.

STOP BEING SO STUCK ON THE COLOR OF A PERSON'S SKIN BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE THE PERSON IS FROM TILL YOU ASK THEM. PLUS IN AMERICA PPL HAVE THIS THING THAT ASKING SOMEONE IF THEY ARE BLACK IS JUST BASICLY ASKING ARE YOU AN AFRICAN AMERICAN....MM SO NO I AM NOT THAT, I AM DOMINICAN. PPL FORGET THAT BLACKS AREN'T JUST AA, BLACKS ARE FROM ANYWHERE.

Lexia
flag as inappropriate/spamReply

Hmmm Interesting...We're(African Americans)are only Americans mostly because our African ancestors were brought HERE during slavery. We're not true Africans but are of African descent...just like alot of you. But I find this article very telling and enlightening. According to a study by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, about 90% of the contemporary Dominican population has some African ancestry.[57] However, most Dominicans self-identify as being of mixed-race rather than "black" in contrast to African identity movements in the United States. A variety of terms are used to represent a range of skintones; these include "morena" (brown), "india" (Indian), "blanca oscura" (dark white), and "trigueño" (wheat colored),[58] among others. Many have claimed that this represents a reluctance to self-identify with African descent and the culture of the freed slaves. According to Dr. Miguel Anibal Perdomo, professor of Dominican Identity and Literature at Hunter College in New York City, "There was a sense of 'deculturación' among the African slaves of Hispaniola. [There was] an attempt to erase any vestiges of African culture from the Dominican Republic. We were, in some way, brainwashed and we've become westernized."[59] However, this view is not universal, as many also claim that Dominican culture is simply different and rejects the racial categorizations of other regions. Ramona Hernández, director of the Dominican Studies Institute at City College of New York asserts that the terms were originally an act of defiance in a time when being mulatto was stigmatized. "During the Trujillo regime, people who were dark skinned were rejected, so they created their own mechanism to fight it" She went on to explain "When you ask, 'What are you?' they don't give you the answer you want . . . saying we don't want to deal with our blackness is simply what you want to hear."[60] The Dominican Republic is not unique in this respect either. In a 1976 census survey conducted in Brazil, respondents described their skin color in 136 distinct terms.[60][61] And then I read this... African Americans or Black Americans are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.[5] In the United States, the term is generally used for Americans with at least partial Sub-Saharan African ancestry. Most African Americans are the descendants of captive Africans who survived the slavery era within the boundaries of the present United States, although some are — or are descended from — voluntary immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, South America, or elsewhere.[ Now being a legal citizen of the United States, we're all Americans...And from those articles above...well, I'm sure people can draw their own conclusions... But I get people have different cultures and want to acknowledge and adhere to them(nothing at all wrong with that), but I do detect alot of self hate...

@shi I KNOW RIGHT...PPL IN THIS DAMN WEBSITE CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT TAKING SHYT ABOUT RACE. DAMN PPL ARE SO STUCK ON COLOR AND RACE...IS HILLARIOUS. ITS FUNNY HOW THE IGNORANCE POPS UP. @LEXIA...DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON SELF HATE. BECAUSE IF I START, I AIN'T GOING TO FINISH, DOMINICANS AIN'T THE ONLY ONES WITH SELF HATE PROBLEMS. SO WHAT R U TRYING TO SAY? OF COURSE, I AM FUKIN HAPPY TO HAVE AFRICAN BLOOD IN ME SHYTTT, I THANK THE LORD I AM NOT PURE EUROPEAN, THAT ALTHOUGH I HAVE A SPANISH LAST NAME, I LOVE MY COLOR OF SKIN AND THE TEXTURE OF MY HAIR WHICH IS WHY I AM GOING NATURAL...NOWWWW I GUESS THAT EVERYONE THAT RELAXES THEIR HAIR, HAS BLOND WEAVES(HINT BEYONCE), CONTACTS, LIGHT VS DARK SHYT...IS SELF HATE SO WHAT R U TRYING TO SAY LEXIA? LEXIA YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND ANYTHING, BECAUSE GOING TO GOOGLE AND GETTING SOME INFO...DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING. UNLESS YOU ARE DOMINICAN AND HAVE EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF...YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING.

Umm I think you know what I'm saying...And I don't have to be Dominican to realize that I'm in an American country and of African descent... And you saying that Dominicans aren't the only ones with self-hate problems means what? Because I never ONCE said there aren't Blacks with alot of self-hate...I'm just calling it how I see it...And wearing blonde weave doesn't have anything to do with self-hate...Or are you implying that Mary J Blige, Keyshia Cole, etc hate themselves as well? And I'm not sure exactly how are you referencing the wearing contacts thing because there are plenty of Black/AA people with naturally light colored eyes...Wanna know how I know, Because it runs all through my family. When I say self-hate, I'm not talking about appearances because we(AFRICAN AMERICANS) come in all flavors, size, shapes, etc...We are just as mixed...But what I mean is getting offended when someone mentions you being Black or AA...I've yet heard Beyonce get offended by that...so try again. I'm not sure where you're from, but if you were from the south, you would definitely know that we Black/AA folks come in all different varieties... I don't have a problem with you claiming Dominican...But if your skin is just as dark as most BLACKS or AFRICAN AMERICANS and you get offended by being called one knowing full well you have some African ancestry, I'm just trying to figure out why would you even come to this American country to beign with if it bothers you that bad? Why even associate yourself with ANYTHING that is heavily associated with Blacks/AA or Americans period if you don't want to be mistaken for one???

MMM I WAS BORN IN THE UNITED STATES AND I WAS RAISED IN THE DOMINICAN REP WHERE MY PARENTS ARE FROM. THEY BROUGHT ME BACK WHEN I WAS 8...SO WHAT WAS I SUPPOSE TO DO?. PPL JUST THINK THAT EVERY DARK PERSON IS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WHILE PPL WHO ARE LIGHT SKIN AND WITH WHITE SKIN CAN BE FROM ANY COUNTRY. IT IS IGNORANCE, BECAUSE WHY JUST LIMIT A PERSON BECAUSE OF THEIR COLOR OF SKIN. PPL SAY OH "SHE LOOKS LATINA" WELL LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING, IF U GO TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND YOUR DARK SKIN, YOU ARE DOMINICAN AND NO ONE SAYS OH YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE A LATINA SHOULD LOOK. IF U GO TO CUBA AND U R DARK SKIN, THEN YOU ARE JUST CUBAN. NOW U COME TO AMERICA IF U A DARK SKIN U R JUST AFRICAN AMERICAN...AND THATS IT. PPL FORGET THAT JAMAICANS ARE DARK, DOMINICANS, PTO RICANS, CUBANS,.....DARK PPL CAN BE ANY ETHINICITY. THATS MY POINT.

It's a difficult position for dark skinned latinas. At times we do *fall short* amongst our own because we are darker skinned as im sure Zoe has probably felt herself at times. But also its hard at times for dominicans to be accepted as blacks because me myself i am not always accepted as a black woman in america. Its sad to argue over this because regardless of if you are black dominican haitian whatever whatever you are beautiful. Zoe can feel she is a black woman if she wants as long as she doesnt disgrace the Dominican culture. Everything would be fine if people just embraced the differences between others. *thats too much to ask tho huh!*
