HA HA! RADIO DJ HANGS UP ON RUSSELL SIMMONS

May 01, 2007. MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Russell Simmons got out of line during a telephone interview on Chicago's wildly popular DJ Trey the Choklit Jok Morning Jumpoff radio show (featuring Kendra G). After being asked about his new "3-word-ban" by the host DJ Trey, Russell became abusive.

But while Russell may be used to talking greasy to people, apparently Trey isn't used to taking it. Because just as the aging mogul was about to get into a rant, DJ Trey hung up the phone. Below is an excerpt of the exchange.

DJ Trey, the staff at MediaTakeOut.com wanted to thank you personally for checking that old queen. I think we speak for everyone in the media when we say - that was long overdo ...

Him hanging, shows that he can't carry an adult conversation.
Russell simply asked him "Do you use the word" and he never answered him instead he hangs up.
This is what is wrong with our society, the word was meant to demean black people, and we as blacks use it as a term of endearment. Like Spike Lee said

He's not saying we should stop saying them in our everyday lives just yet. He is saying that artists should not use them unwarranted in songs. This is true. How many times have you heard a song and the swearing was just not necessary to get the point across. For example: the difference between "I love my chick" and "I love my bish"...come on people. A lot of clean versions actually sound better than the vulgar one. Artists make clean versions anyways for the radio, so they might as well cut down on labor and not make the vulgar version. I'm not saying dont swear at all, but I could only see it justified on an album with a fit of rage. Don't use the words "hoe" or "bish" unless you are calling someone that for a reason. I never refer to a woman as either unless she is one, and they are out there, lol

most people use the word 'n*gga* as a term of endearment. I say it faithfully and i don't do it to belittle anyone. It's like 'homie'. We took that word and flipped the original meaning to something we can use...i don't see any problem with it.

    @ GUILTY_PLEASURE

Yolandah could be Black. Unfortunately, Black women and men do curse at their spouses. Even more, I have witnessed many Black women curse at their children (girls and boys). As a child growing up my father would curse at my mother, my brother and myself. I will not curse at my children and I will train them to not curse at others.

    yquest
and also with that word...we flipped it on whites where they CANNOT say it. It's like an unwritten law that whites know not to say it to us...so it seems like that's the only thing we can do to whites and own..."u better not call us a N*gga..." and turn around and call each other that lol. I see it as power. Now u want blacks to not say it neither?? please...

I like how dude handled the situation all the through, he did nothing but respect that man, so him getting like that was totally uncalled for.

.....Mohatma Simmons is crude and abrasive, and sometimes for no reason. I respect what he did an all but I ain't gon sit on how I feel about ol boi. Da ni99a rude. PERIOD.

As anyone who sees my posts on here knows, I use da word ni99a regularly. I don't feel like it can be used everywhere on with anyone. Some of our cousins find it offensive and if someone says don't call them that then I respect that and I don't. I for one ain't gon stop usin it. That's just me and I won't apologize for it. Also plenty black folk call each other ni99a. I do agree wit Russ on the clean editing of the "3" words. it makes total sense. If I buy a "clean" version of a cd I don't wanna hear b!tch on it.

Yall talking some real ignorant stuff right now..Russell Simmons is an icon in the hip hop community. He established and gave many people in the game their start in hip hop. He has made movies, a clothing line, production companies, charities, his paper is extrememly long. He is outspoken and speaks his mind because he is a boss. Do you think that your major CEO, CFO, COO etc, are nice guys. When you have been in his position to fight for what you want on a daily basis to give us as a people a chance to do what we want..you want to sh*T on his game for being outspoken. PLEASE!!!!If you are a offended by a rude personality you are going to have a rough road ahead of you; because believe it or not that is life. Diffcult people, strong opinions and guess what people are going to listen; cause money talks and he also got people backing him on it. Don't sleep on Russell Simmons I am telling you. If he wanted to make an issue of this hang up call...he could make crazy problems for this DJ..his voice is powerful in the hip hop industry but he is not about that he is about uplifting people..and you know what..he don't even remember about this interview with this DJ..why..irrelevant. He got better things to do..like running businesses. Out!

LMAO HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA, HILARIOUS! I know Russ gets frusterated but he has no right to talk to people like that. I couldn't hear the interview, and I don't watch Run's house, so I don't know how dude is, but in regard to the use of nword, I cosign with yquest and DeadsexyG, I feel they are upset (white people) because they can't use it so now they have to make negativity out of it, when we don't use it like that, it is more of what's homie, point blank. and last time I checked I never heard any of the rap artist state [EXPLETIVE], which is the word we should be concerned with not [EXPLETIVE].

Sexyluv, you are right about what Russel Simmons has brought to the rap game-He is a pioneer. But at the same time, just because you are financially successful or whatever, doesn't give you the entitlement to talk down to someone and greasy at that. @ SEXYLUV

    I agree and disagree.

Russell Simmons IS an elder and and icon. He will go down in the history books under the subject of hip hop. Russell did bring hip hop to a new level, this is a fact.

This is why I disagree. Small example of rap scene when Russell was on the rise: Kurtis Blow; Run DMC & Jam Master Jay; Fat Boys; Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, L.L. Cool Jay; Whodini; '85 movie "Krush Groove"; '84 movie "Beat Street". During this time mainstream rap music didn't degrade Black women and there was no cursing on every song. Russell knows that gangster rap and degrading Black women was not needed to sell records/CDs, so why not stop it? Black people lived in poor communities back in the '70s and '80s just like we did in the '90s - present.

Also, Def Comedy Jam, produced by Russell, did have good comedians but the cursing was non stop. Russell was not born yesterday (1957), "comedy" does not mean cursing. Actually, a good comedian can have people on the floor without saying one curse word. If a curse word drives a point across and is a genuine part of the JOKE then fine. But in Def Comedy Jam cursing WAS the joke.

Again, Russell is one of the top contributors to hip hop. However, at some point, for some reason, Russell decided to move hip hop in an unfavorable direction.

    1 Question for You All...

Isn't it funny how he wants to be the king of censorship AFTER he has literally made millions off the WORDS of rappers since the 80's?

I adore Kimora but between the two of them, they have gotten filthy rich off of black people in EVERY neighborhood in the US. And now this?!?

This has to stop. The hypocrisy is unfathomable.

Rus was in the wrong. I would hung up on him too!

But do agree that as a people we NEED to take some personal responsibility when it comes to down-talking one another with such hurtful words.

also, did ya'll hear the dj take in a deep breath as if he was going to take him down through the phone right after Rus said "are you listening to me?"

It sounded as if he was going to smack him straight across the phone lines for trying to check him on his OWN RADIO SHOW!wtf rus?

But why did he still plug Russell's book. I wouldn't said s.h.i.t. (That man's got enough money...we don't need to fill up his pockets ne more)

Let me make one thing clear...Rus is a great hip-hop pioneer.

I am not sure but does the recording also have Uncle Rus calling back and apologizing to Trey? Actually they apologized to each other (Rus called back) on the air. It was quite uplifting to hear two black men handle business and not just act hood. I respected both of them more after that.

Trey does not take deal with the greasiness of alot of in-studio guests either. He tossed Vanessa Williams (from the Soul Food series, the dreaded one) a$$ out of the studio when she kept popping too much attitude. He told her straight up to GET OUT...

The N*gga is not a word of endearment. It is word of disrespect and degrade. So many of our people have died trying to end the use of the word and we just flip it like it's nothing. It's sad that we thik it's ok to disrespect ourselves and each other instead of just not using the word. Our generation is messed up.

How in the world do people think they can make others stop using certain words. I personally don't care, as long as I'm not being called a B or the N word. This is stupid and dumb as hell, unless they plan on inserting devices into peoples bodies to make them not say ceratin words, they can hang this idea up. People are going to say what they, and just because they don't say it in public doesn't mean it won't get said at home.. This idea is a waste of energy, time and who knows what else

This is not a laughing matter! I live in Chicago and was unfortunately listening the station. The interview (if that's what you want to call it) was terrible! Tre was not listening to Russ he was READING questions!- Mistake # 1. Instead of being a man and handling the situation, Tre hung up the phone- Mistake # 2. To constantly replay the incident all weekend was WEAK!!! Tre should learn to be a man and demand respect without being disrepsectful! There is something sad about black men running and hiding from uncomfortable situations! Man Up with Dignity! MTO, Tre apologized on Monday so print and play that!

First off, I like to read the posts for entertainment but today some of you guys disappoint me. LIEUTENANT-you are one of the few people on here to recognize, that is cool...Yolandah, I don't know you but I like to assume the positive. You are in your home when you use this word with your hubby, but sweetie, don't tell other folks that on the net. I'm sure white people read this site too and they are rejoicing at comments like yours and Yquest's. I love my Black and Brown people to my death but it pains me to hear us say stuff like that. YQuest, you are acting like "some" black folks are doing it big when they "flip" that stupid word. Flipping what? And how does that give Blacks who use it power over white people? WOW. Where'd you get that line of thinking? If anything, Whites have flipped it on YOU because darn right they don't have to say the word to you anymore, you've fallen into the trap they wanted you to by calling yourselves that FOR them. People who REALLY flipped it on them were folks like Martin and Coretta, and I'm willing to bet, yours and my grandparents who got sprayed down with hoses and bitten up by dogs trying to get those idiots to respect us. And younger people come along today, with a total disregard for what was fought for and defend this ignorant word. Come on people, you have to learn better...

In regards to the interview and the attitude of Russell Simmons during 'Run's House', Russell Simmons is so rude, domineering and always cursing. He first insulted the DJ by asking if he listening or something down that line so damn publicly.
I believe the DJ would have started to curse so that's why he ended the convo.
But looking at it now if Russell was more professional, he would have being dealt with accordingly.

I'm sorry, but we put people like Russ on WAY to high of a pedestal. I'm not saying that he shouldn't be proud of his accomplishments, or we as black people shouldn't be proud of his accomplishments, but its pretty sad that as a "community" our only claim-to-fame that we have to try and be proud of is Hip Hop. Have you listened and watched it lately? It isn't exactly anything to brag about.

I'll never forget when I was in college and a student teacher did a human relations study of kids in her school. She asked 10 white kids and 10 black kids (this was in Trenton, NJ - not the best neighborhood in NJ to say the least) ages 6-8 what they wanted to be when they grew up. The white kids answers varied, but the top 3 answers were Doctor, Astronaut, and President. The black kids: 8 out of 10 wanted to be rappers. I think this points to some serious issues in our "community" and perhaps also shows why we are in the position we are within this country in the year 2007...think about it.

I think that the whole censoring the word [EXPLETIVE], is crazy! Our people have been using this word since the begining of time. I feel that if we stop now.... then we will be making non hip-hop heads happy! Every body wants to shut down, what they don't understand! I WAS LISTENING TO TRE THE CHOCOLATE JOCK'S SHOW THAT MORNING AND I HEARD EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED. TREY SAID HE DIDNT WANT TO HANG UP ON RUSSEL BUT THE WAY RUSSEL CAME AT HIM AND TALKED TO HIM LIKE HE WAS A LITTLE BOY AND NOT A GROWN MAN, I DONT CARE WHO SAYS DIFFRENTLY IF SOMEONE DISRESPECTED YOU INFRONT OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, YOU ARE'T GONNA JUST TAKE IT YOU ARE GOING TO STAND UP FOR YOURSELF! THAT IS ALL TREY WAS DOING. AND LIKE HE SAID "I DONT CARE IF YOU ARE RUSSEL SIMMONS OR NOT, I WAS JUST ASKIN A QUESTION" SO RUSSEL NEEDS TO GET HIS HEAD FROM UP HIS ASS AND COME OFF OF THE HIGH HORSE. BUT IN HIS DEFENSE HE CALLED BACK AND SAID "I FELT BAD ABOUT THAT EXCHANGE BECAUSE YOU WERE TRYING TO MAKE A POINT AND I WAS TRYING TO GET A POINT ACROSS..." SO HE AND TRE MADE UP : TRUE THOUGH MEDIA TAKEOUT WHERE IS THAT PART OF THE AUDIO?

So let me get this right (to some comments) Because he's Russell Simmons and Trey is a dj, Trey dont deserve respect plain and simple Russell Simmons is a Prick! I dont give a [EXPLETIVE] what he's done he aint GOD everyone deserves respect and he was not respecting that man on his show. Just like dude said I dont care if he Russell Simmons or not what that does mean everyone is beneath him cause that's sure how he acts all the time!! Even Runs oldest son said he dont mess with his uncle Russ cause he's ridiculously mean ! How bout this, Bill Gates is richer and has done more and he is as sweet and gentle as can be yes I know Ive had the pleasure of meeting him and but whereever you see him he 's not acting like he owns the world when technically his rich ass can buy the world!! Thats whats wrong with black people, we get a power and money and and act like our [EXPLETIVE] dont stink the "N word" has nothing to do with this interview its about respect that man didnt disrecpect him until he got out of pocket and he should've hung up on his ass!!

I too live in Chicago and I listen Trey & Kendra every morning, and I think Trey did the adult thing by hanging up on Russell before the hole thing became a bigger mess. Russell Simmons always had a rude demeanor about himself, he doesn't know how to approach people in the proper way! He talks to people like they are s/h/i/t and he needs to realize just because he a "Hip-Hop Mogul" that doesn't give him the right to talk to people like they are beneath them. People need to remember "The Lord Giveth and The Lord Taketh Away". I commend Trey for handling that situation w/maturity, and I'm glad that they were able to settle the dispute w/grace and dignity.

i agree with kharings, Simmons definatly could stand to be more humble. as messed up as it seems, it was satisfying to hear somebody click on him like that. funny stuff. i wish i could have spoke up for myself the one time i dealt with him, but i wasn't trying to get fired over it.

What I can't believe is that we as black people are actually having a conversation about whether or not we want to use the "N" word to describe ourselves or if we have the right to call black women bitches and hoes in our songs. We need to stop using these words. We did not come from the land of N*ggas so why do we keep calling ourselves that? Man slavery really did a number on most of us.

HOW IS THIS FOR AN EYE-OPENER

With the one possible exception of Percy “Master P” Miller there is no such person as a black Hip Hop mogul. Puffy ain’t one, neither is Andre Harrell, nor Rush(Russell Simmons) , nor Andre “Dr Dre” Young, and Marion “Suge” Knight especially was never a mogul. Neither is Shawn “Jay Z” Carter , his ex-sidekick Damon Dash, or Jermaine Dupri or even Bob Johnson. All these folks might be rich, but they sure are no moguls.
Now Jack Warner, he was a mogul. Ahmed Ertegun, that was a (mini) mogul. David Geffen is a mogul. So is there such a thing as a Hip Hop mogul? Of course, there are quite a few of them. Here’s the list: Clive Davis, Rick Rubin, Lyor Cohen, Steve Gottlieb, Jimmy Iovine, Ted Fields, Doug Morris, Mel Lewinter, Edgar Bronfman, Jr., Sumner Redstone, Percy Miller. Then there’s the Hip Hop ueber-mogul, attorney Paul Schindler, and his sidekick, business manager Burt Padell.Ok. So what about the black record industry pioneers of Hip Hop. Any there? Well, maybe Sylvia Robinson in the late 1970’s, but that was over in a heartbeat. The real Hip Hop record pioneers? There you have them: William Socolov, Arthur Russell (Sleeping Bag Records), Rick Rubin (Def Jam Recordings), Steve Plotniki and Corey Robbins (Profile Records), Jerry Allen (BDP Records), Tom Silverman (Tommy Boy Records), maybe even Hiroshi Matsuo (Pallas Records). None of them black, one is Japanese. Oh, and let’s not forget Arthur Baker (Fat Boys), and the late Steve Salem.
And no no no. Russell Simmons did not co-found Def Jam. Nor did he ever run Def Jam. Rick Rubin ran Def Jam. Later Lyor Cohen ran Def Jam. Nor did Russell ever sign Def Jam’s big acts. LL Cool J? Rick Rubin. The Beastie Boys? Rick Rubin. Public Enemy? Rick Rubin. Oran “Juice” Jones? Lyor Cohen. So what was Russell’s claim to fame? Simple, Rush is the house that Joey built. Russell is Joey “Run” Simmons’ brother. That Rev. Run (oh, boy "Rev." Now, that's a whole other story) of Run-DMC fame. That’s what made Rick Rubin decide to open the door for Russell.Ah, but Run-DMC. Now that’s a black owned and controlled group!?!? Nope. Produced by: Rick Rubin. Record company: Profile Records, (Cory Robbins and Steve Plotniki). Management: Rush Artist Management run by…Lyor Cohen. Publicist: Bill Adler. Black? Nope, nice guy, but absolutely not black.Ok, their attorneys were black. Right? Nope. Grubman, Indursky and Schindler. Not black. Black business management? Nope Burt Padell. Not black. Then, … ah, but, but, but at least their booking agents were black, right? Naw. Norby Walters (aka Norby Meyers), Cara Lewis, not black. (Cara, being a red head, is definitely not black).Public Enemy, in their heyday? Record Company: Def Jam. Not black. Rush Management, not black, Norby Walters Agency, Pyramid Agency, William Morris Agency, (Cara Lewis) not black. Publicist: Bill Adler.BDP (Scott la Rock, Kris Parker and Scottie Morris), Record Company: BDP Records: Not black. Attorney (Jay Kramer), not black, management (Jay Kramer), not black.

On another note, people forget that Master P REALLY is a master.
First rapper to own 100% of his Masters
First and only rapper/CEO to receive 85% of profits in a major deal
Has sold 75 million records as an independent CEO
First rapper to be worth over $100 million
First rapper to be worth over $300 million
Suffice it to say he is one SMART COOKIE! Neither Jay, Diddy, nor Russell have accomplished those BY THEMSELVES!

That argument was not even necessary. Russel didn't understand that the DJ was stating that OTHERS might call him a hypocrite. The DJ was not clear in making that distinction. Miscommunication, noting more or less. At the end of the day, the DJ looks bad - because he should have the balls to keep a guest on the phone, even when it looks like a fight will happen. You never know when you will need someone, one day. That was a bad move. I wish black people could just get along w/ out all the drama.

I just wanted to comment about what Russ said about Ben Chavis. He mentioned the hip hop summit and Chavis' involvement for the past 8 years which is good but is in no way his crowning achievement. He said don't call him NAACP the DJ didn't call him NAACP, he said he was the executive director and CEO of the NAACP and he was in 93 and 94. I don't see what the problem was. NAACP CEO is a whole lot more prestigious then a freaking wack hip Hop summit that has done nothing for the black community in america. I just wanted to point that out.

to Lieutenant, Pink tequila and to others that cosign with them: let me ask you all a question, why do you all assume NIGa and Niger is the same word?

ALso to whatcommunity: because a person did one study in one neighborhood, with 20 kids is not grounds to assume all black kids think like that...

honeybrown: they both apologized so please calm down before jumpin down someone's throat....

PODEEBO: man you had the best post on this mug, and you are so right, your facts are on point, and THEY ARE DEFINITELY EYE OPENERS, THANKS!

@ pink tequila- i understand where you're coming from, but this is a totally new generation. It was funny when Richard Pryor (THE KING OF COMEDY) used the word back in the 70s...but NOW it's a problem. Now it must be abolished because of some damn Imus. That fool just slapped us in the face again cause now we beefing. It's too late for people to try to "BAN" a word. How old are you? You should've tried that back then when it first was introduced as N.I.G.G.A. Who originated that word?? To me N*gg-er is already banned. By trying to do something about this word now is crazy and it's going to divide black people even more especially the young generation and the elders.

Po Dee Bo...who you think put up that money for master p? His money was never clean from the jump. You make a truthful and valid points on the hip hop industry; but all the people you speak of are behind the scenes making it happen. They are unknown because they are the ones who get their hands dirty and cut the deals that we don't know about. Its a shady busines and only the powerful stay on top and unknown.

    strongblackwoman
thetruthhurts how do you know where P money come from? because he had a thug mentality's, man quit jumping on the bandwagon....

Excellent comment! You're on point. When and where is your next class?

I request that you post on every relevant story (about 1 out of 100).

I don't think there is a damn thing wrong with what Russell said. Ya boy is not a good interviewer. He could have easily handled that situation if he had the skills.

    HardCore
Russell, Run, Diddy are some of the worst people that has infected the black communities. Frauds-Frauds-Frauds. I prove my point: That friggin' Visa RushCard has so many fees that your $100 deposit gets turn into $58. real quick!(that's only if you DON'T use it). Check it out. And that Run's house show is just a platform for their own cult. Run paid $3000. to be called a Prophet(Rev.) and you can too! No Theological Seminary school or education/studies is needed. Just cash! I'll prove my point. http://www.zoeministries.com/

Even his wife is involved: http://www.prophetessjustinesimmons.blogspot.com/

They will go before God on your behalf, and discern the script that has been written for your life! FOR ONLY $365.

    How's that for black enpowerment.

i heard this on the radio when it happened. Russel Simmons is a loud mouth. You see it on Run's House

    princessof_la
Point is..two GROWN A** should be able to debate, without acting like B*tches. For instances, what if this was held on "live" television. Like "REAL MEDIA" Debates? That's why we are where we are today. Obviously, Russell talks too much, but facts will shut the mouth of any idiot. To me they BOTH failed.

It is sad that they both behaved poorly, but at the same time you aren't going to see popular DJ's hanging up on their major celebrity guests. There is a level of professionalism on both points. How can you get the message out when you are cutting off your guests and insulting their point of view. The DJ really pushed his view point on his listeners. And some of his listeners would have benefited from hearing what Russell had to say without his intervention.

Truth is on the side of the oppressed.

    Scanalyzer
Russell Semmens is an in the closet jerk and a faker. Big surprise, that industry breeds em by the dozens.

    AgelessHarmony
True, Russell's not the easiest person to try to have a conversation with. However, someone in DJ Trey's profession wouldn't have to hang up on him if he had REAL skillz. Should been prepared for anything. If ya can't stand the heat, get out the DJ's booth.

    focus
Russell has been in control of his empire and his minions for too long. He has surrounded himself with "yes" people and that's why he has no clue about his personless personality. If he was becoming belligerent,I would've hung up too. The hosts of two of the radio shows I listen to will do the same thing.

When Richard Pryor took a trip to Africa, he came back and never used the "N" word again. People can continue to use that word and all the b*tches and h*es but don't expect too much of society to buy that crap anymore. Sales are way down.

LMAO@ the recording!!!! That sh1t was smooth as hell!!!

    mya07
That was funny. Russell is a grown a** man that didn't get to where is f**king around. He said he was one of the first to bleep the words out, then the dj asked a stupid question. I understand because Russell and I are simular in our way of thinking, I'm just a little nicer. If someone makes a statement don't comeback with a stupid question as if you just ignored their statement. People hate when others don't listen to what they are saying. Maybe the dj didn't realize he had done that but it was to late and he was about to get it.

    candiceandchrisbrown
russell is ignorant he is a blackman that can change the world. he needs some counseling you can tell from his grammar that their are some deep rooted issues. he is disrespectful to his wife and anybody that comes in contact with him. it's would be a same to be an old man and no one wants to be bother with you.

    gigi2007
wow I just saw this posting..anyway I applaud the radio DJ..you should never let anyone talk to you like that..no matter who they are..good for you! thats what happens when people are high off of money and power, they feel they can do anything to anyone..isnt Russell into YOGA? thats supposed to make you a peaceful person..plus isnt he supposed to promote peaceful dialogue since he created the hip hop summit? why is he on the radio yelling at the DJ? was he high? freakin fake azz people in this world..Im tellin ya, its disappointing

    dondi
i'm from chi-town and actually heard the interview...russell was way out of line...but he f*cked with the wrong one that day....trey was not having it and hung up on dude...trey said he was a grown man from the west side of chicago and NOBODY was gonna talk to him like he was a punk...i'm a big trey fan and now an even bigger fan of his following the exchange...however i thought it was very big of russell to call back and apologize...both men demonstrated how grown men should handle conflict and resolution...big ups to both of them

    dondi
oh yeah and to the truth hurts i have to respectfully disagree with you...russell couldn't have touched trey...cuz chitown does things a bit differntly...we're a very political town and trey has a history of not bowing down to 'diva' like attitudes from celebrities...after hearing the exchange and the initial condesenttion from russell we in chitown would have made sure that trey didn't have any backlash...chicago is a huge radio market...this was one our urban stations any artist dealing with music wouldn't want to alienate this station or they're competitor staton whose program director is so large he often is shouted out in grammy acceptance speeches.
