: MediaTakeOut.com just got its hands on a NEW REPORT created by the non-profit think tank The Insight Center for Community Economic Development. And it showed the DIRE need for increased wealth building – especially for Black Women!!
Here is an excerpt:
Excluding vehicles, [working age] single black women have a median wealth of $100 and Hispanic women $120 respectively, while their same-race male counterparts have $7,900 and $9,730. The median wealth of single white women is $41,500. To put it another way, single black and Hispanic women have one penny of wealth for every dollar of wealth owned by their male counterparts and a tiny fraction of a penny for every dollar of wealth owned by white women.But it gets worse, the same article finds that for ALL single Black women, the average net worth drops to only $5.With so little in reserve, half of all single black and Hispanic women could not afford to take an unpaid sick day or to even have a major appliance repaired without going into debt.
This is a very sad article to see. Check out the below charts too . . . which show that single Black men tend to fare far BETTER than women. The biggest difference . . . the financial burden of child care falls DISPROPORTIONATELY on mothers.
First off all money does not make you wealthy. You can have all the money in the world and be depressed, lonely and miserable. It's not so much how much you earn, it's how much you save. And I know too many people with good jobs that can't budget, can't manage money, and don't know how to invest wisely to make that money grow. I won't comment on the study because I haven't looked into it, but from what I've seen, a good job does not equal having net worth if you're spending money faster than its coming in. Ok enough with the get an education I have an education and it is the reason I am in debt. What people fail to realize is that Caucasions tend to have more help when they get out into the world not always but more likely. My parents paid for none of my college expenses maybe books and such but none of the loans are in their names. Another thing people tend to turn a blind eye to is the sexism that still exists. Being a black woman is a bit different than being a black man. Not only are you black but you are a woman. We will earn less and get promoted less even though we have the experience. There are so many things that attribute to this dismal report. Just another classic example of ways they are trying to make black people look bad. I mean where did they do their research, who were their subjects and how did they find them, is the wealth disproportionate in that area. For example, right now unemployment for African Americans is higher because of the economy but also because many of these companies refuse to hire blacks. So that can have an effect on income and savings when you don't have any to speak of.
Secondly OUR black leadership has failed us. Instead of teaching us HOW we can become independently successful and financially independent through creating our OWN businesses, schools, and and owning our own land.. them mutha fukkas wanted to sing KUMBUYA and we see WHERE KUMBUYA has gotten us today.. While some of us are successful we stay circulating OUR money in HIS banks which keep him WEALTHY for generations of his children to come and us rich but not WEALTHY.

I see what you're TRYING to say, but your delivery leaves much to be desired. If you were sincerely interested in seeing black women improve economically you would offer constructive ( vs destructive ) critisim and provide a solution as well. The first thing you should have learned when entering the real world is to not just come with a grievance but a solution as well. i.e. "To help increase your wealth maybe you could invest in this stock it's returns look promising..." every one who disagrees with you is not ghetto or thuggish or any of the various other slurs you've used on here.
& what about the fathers? I was blessed with an great father. He's always there for me emtionally & financially if I need him. I have no student loans & I don't qualify for grants cus of my income, so he pays my tuition. He's not rich, just middle class. It's called saving for ur kid's future. Oh I can offer some constructive criticism. Don't spend so much money. I don't live lavishly although I love nice things. I make excellent money, but I think about the future. Always pay yourself and try to put as much as you can in your savings acct. For low income families, if your city has an IDA(Individual something Account), can't remember the name, utilize it. For every $1 you put in the city will match either 3 or 4. You can then put that money towards school or as a down payment on a new home.
Save your income tax checks. That is a huge amount of money, and a great opportunity to increase your capital. Shop around and look for bargains. Utilize programs run by your cities for food and clothing etc. If you get child support put some of that money away after you pay bills. Don't go and get your hair done and your nails did lol.

As far as child support, sometimes that is out of your control, you have to find ways around that. Dead beat moms and dads that don't contribute is no excuse to not think of savvy ways to save and put away your money. This is a specious study, at best, and blatantly dishonest, at worst. I know most people on here haven't set foot on a university campus much less have an understanding of the fundamentals of social science research and methodology, which is why people can actually take this joke of a study seriously.

I think 80% of posters don't understand this article at all. I'll contribute that to young age. Anyway, they're not saying that black women make $5 a year they're saying that's theyre net worth. Meaning how much they have in assets. Ok, for those who don't know, assets are things like savings, stocks, investments, home ownership. Not what you have in your checking account, what you have in retirment accounts, and so forth. It's still sad, just not the catastrophy most of you are making it out to be.
well, due to our history, blacks will never be able to be WEALTHY. we may be able to gain some RICHES but wealth is completely different. wealth comes from years of old money. most black families never had that luxury, and with the way things are going in the economy now, chances are, the luxury will never come. it's sad but true.

This problem is very easy to fix. Instead of passin up your employers 401k plans use it. Most young people don't want them takin out extra money out of your paycheck, but if you don't, this is what will happen. You will be 40 years old and worth $5. I had at least $13,000 in a 401k before I was 25. Instead of blaming white people or black men, get educated about money and do something about it.

These surveys ignore the fact of institutionalized racism and how previous white generations benefitted from government-backed programs that omitted Blacks' participation and allowed whites jobs, education and home purchases. Funny thing is, is that these single white womens' net is primarily based on the fact that their wealth is usually inherited. Many of these white chicks are the same one's greeting you at the neighborhood Walmart.
Moving forward Black people, we can steadily dead these types of findings by simply, buying homes, life insurance, getting an education & leaving a will.

It’s a study designed and created by some [EXPLETIVE], who probably doesn’t even know the first thing in statistics.
Your net worth is the sum of all of you assets minus your liabilities. Assets are considered to be any commodity of economic value, or simply put, anything that will appreciate in value, not depreciate.
You see…a black woman will quick to boast about how they are graduating college at a rate 2x that of black men…but, what they fail to understand, the average student loan for a BS (bullshyt) degree is about $20 K…and is counted as debt or liability that has to be repaid.

Thank you. That was my intention and exactly why I found fault with a few others who posted comments. I mean seriously! As a whole according to this study we don't even make up a full percent of the wealth in this country! That's horrible and discouraging news even when accepting that the study is bound to be flawed. I started reading comments expecting to find anger at the circumstances of course but unity as well because this effects us all but instead people on here are choosing to bring down their own people even further. I couldn't find one comment from a black man that questioned why a white man in the same position has 35 percent (!) more wealth than he does. Instead they laugh at the women for being worse off (according to this study) than originally thought. I feel like screaming honestly. Then we have those such as Its too much who is obviously blessed enough to not have this worry and she responds with negativity and contempt. I mean cmon use your blessings to the advantage of the community and we won't have to be apart of studies like this. Does our community have problems? Yes Are we typically at the lower end of the economic totem pole. Yes But what are we gonna DO about it people let's offer solutions and encouragement. What I find funny is that you aren’t so upset about black women devaluing themselves by agreeing to be baby mothers to no good men, by choosing to be hoodrats who don’t get themselves educated, and by agreeing to have no self-responsibility in relation to economics. Finding highly educated black women nowadays is a tough task, and so, educated black men are moving towards white and Latino women. It’s really not that hard.
