On September 20th Michael Baisden along with comedian George Wilborn, national celebrities, and thousands of loyal listeners will March on the Jena Courthouse to demand justice for Mychal Bell, one of the black teenagers awaiting sentencing in the Jena 6 Case. Mychal Bell could receive up to 22 years in prison for what amounted to nothing more then a fist fight between black and white high school students.

Switch was compiled with the two older brothers of the Debarge family. Bobby and Tommy Debarge. The other band members were not related to them.
Jermaine Jackson signed the young group and that's probably why Janet got with James. The families have been working together at Motown for years.
Debarge later came out and included all siblings, Randy, El, Bunny, James and Mark. After a sucessful career that included everything from music to movie and tv show appearances, El decided it was time for a solo-career. (Bunny left to start a family)
My family is from Grand Rapids and Detroit as this family is, and in spite of all of the tragedy this family has gone through, I will always be a fan of all of their music. Everyone from Switch all the way down to Chico Debarge.

Bunny used to live near me, and she was strung out on drugs at one time too. Chico was hear a few months ago visiting my cousin, and his azz couldn't even stand or sit still for 3 straight seconds; he needed a hit so bad, and he looked like he weighed 80 pounds. Bobby, from Switch, died of AIDS, and that was after he served like 5 or 6 years in jail. This family has been through it, man. All that damn wasted talent. |

Now he can get it....he is fine. Did ya'll notice how they put B for BLACK for his race on the documents. Bunny was always pretty, and the drugs didn't seem to affect her looks. She's kicked the habit, or at least that was the last I heard. Peaches was the one with the more serious drug problem. She wasn't in the singing group. Chico's very vocal about all their problems, including the abuse they all went through growing up at the hands of their dad. He says they all have their drug of preference, i.e., one of them prefers crack, one of them prefers coke, one prefers heroin. I can't remember who he said did which drug, but his thing is heroin. He used to date Nona Gaye, and he says she's the one who got him strung out. Listening to him, it's easy to understand why they all turned to drugs, and why the group fell apart. I'm surprised some of them are still alive. |

Both of Nona's parents had drug abuse issues, including Marvin. Nona's been doing drugs since her teens. She's another one who had a lot to endure growing up, especially after her father got killed when she was 9, and he had no money left after taxes to even support her and her mom. So I guess it was their personal tragedies that brought her and Chico together, but it was definitely a bad connection. Both of them came from family histories of drug abuse, both of them had tried and failed to quit, so naturally when they got together, it was destined to be a disaster. Chico really loved her, and he took their breakup hard. He looks horrible. |

And another thing I forgot to mention, when Chico was here and talking about his family and his issues, this brotha broke down and cried. I'm talking in front of total strangers. And nobody knew what to do because nobody was expecting it. He was so sad. I wish all the DeBarges well. They seem like very cool, down to earth people. |

Wooooooow, Chico did THAT??? And I've always known about Marvin Gaye, in fact, a lot of those Motown artists did SOME sort of substance, including Smokey Robinson, who did a lot of the artists' song writing.
But, dannnnnng, Moms too? I know this isn't funny, but I wonder if Marvin's died was on something when he shot him that day. That was one of the saddest days I'll ever remember. |

I remember an interview he did when his first cd came out (which I still have by the way) and he told the reporter that if music doesnt work out for him then he'll have to go back to selling and taking drugs to make money, get by and ease the pain...I just thought that was so sad...You've already predicted your future...

This family has been troubled as many as you have stated for a long time. I recently read on the internet an excerpt from their sister Bunny's (who was strung out on drugs for a long time) upcoming book. There was sexual abuse from the father (much like which has been alleged about the Jacksons') of everyone the boys and the girls. In addition there was suppose to have been some incesterous relationships between the siblings (I think Bobby was suppose to have raped Tommy). It's deep. If anyone is interested I can find the website I found the information on and post it. Sexual abuse is just so horrible. Some people never recover from it. I use to work with the father's second wife and their son was killed a couple of years ago in a car accident. Generational curses are real. |
